1. Let in
（中に入れる、人に秘密を明かす）
“let”は「許す」、“in” は「中」を意味することから、 “let in” の根本的なイメージは「中に入れることを許す」です。
“let in” は「中に入れる」を意味し、一般的に人や物が中に入ることを許可する状況で使われます。例えば、友人宅の玄関前で「中に入れてもらえないかな？」とインターホン越しにお願いするときは、“Can you let me in?”と言います。その他、窓を開けて新鮮な空気を入れたり、ブラインドを開けて太陽の光を室内に入れるような状況でも使われます。
ちなみに、 “let someone in on ~”は人に秘密を明かしたり、プライベートな情報を伝えることを意味します。例えば、隠し事をしている友達に「秘密を教えてよ」と聞くときは、“Let me in on the secret.”と言います。
“let in ~”は“let ~ in”のように2語に分けて使うこともできますが、“let someone in on ~” は分けて使うことはできません。

2. Let out
（外に出す、感情を吐き出す、秘密を漏らす、声を出す）
“let”は「許す」、“out” は「出す」を意味することから、 “let out” の根本的なイメージは「外に出すことを許す」です。この表現は、状況によって様々な意味で使えます。
一つ目は、人やペットなどを「外に出す」といった意味で使われ、対象物を外に出すことを許可するニュアンスになります。例えば、「犬を外に出していいよ」は “You can let out the dog. / You can let the dog out.”と言います。また、先生が生徒たちに早めの帰宅を許可する時や、空気や水を抜く（Let out the air. / Let the water out.）ような状況でも使われます。
二つ目の意味は「感情を外に出す」です。感情を抑えている人や考え事をしている人に対して“Let it out.”と言うと、「思っていることを言って/吐き出して」という意味になります。
三つ目は「プライベートな情報を外に出す」、要するに「秘密を漏らす」ことを意味します。例えば、友人に「秘密を漏らさないで」と言う場合は、“Don’t let out the secret. / Don’t let the secret out.”と言います。ちなみに、英語のイディオムに“Let the cat out of the bag.”という表現がありますが、これは“Let the secret out.（秘密を漏らす）”と同じ意味になります。
四つ目は、音や声を「出す」という意味で使われます。例えば、「ため息をつく」は “Let out a sigh.”、「叫び声を上げる」は “Let out a scream/cry.”のように表します。
“let out ~”は、“let ~ out”のように2語に分けて表現することもできます。
