1. Do one’s homework
（下調べをする）
“do one’s homework”は「宿題をする」を意味しますが、homeworkには「予習」や「下調べ」といった意味もあることから、日常会話では事前に必要な情報を収集して「下調べをする」という意味でも使われます。授業で学ぶ内容を事前に homework（予習）することで授業の理解度が上がるように、日常生活でも事前に homework（下調べ）することによって物事がスムーズに進む可能性が高まるといったイメージです。
この表現は、仕事の面接前に企業研究をしたり、海外移住や海外旅行前に現地について調べたり、クライアントとの打ち合わせ前に必要な情報を集めたりするような状況で使われます。日常会話だけでなく、ビジネスでもよく使われる表現で、例えば「下調べをするように」は “Make sure you do your homework.”、「私は下調べをしました」は “I did my homework.”のように表現します。

2. Use up
（使い切る）
useの後にupを加えることで「～し尽くす」という意味になることから、“use up”は何かを使い切ったり、使い果たしたりすることを表します。揚げ物の最中に家にある油を全て使い切ってしまった時は“I used up (all of) the oil.”、家を購入するために貯金を使い果たしてしまった時は“I used up (all of) my savings.”のように表現します。ちなみに、日常会話では全て使い切ったことを強調するために、“use up”の後に“all of”を加えて表現することがよくありますが、”use up”だけで「～を使い切る」という意味で使うことができます。
また、“use up”は物に限らず、時間やエネルギー、運などに対して使うこともできます。例えば、良いことばかりが続いた後、「運を使い果たしていないといいんだけど」と言いたい時は、“I hope I didn’t use up (all of) my luck.”のように表現します。
