Hey, what’s going on? This is Hapa School Fall Session Week 1 Day 1. It’s our first day today and I hope you are ready to have some fun! Today we’re going to listen to Jimmy Kimmel interview former president, Barack Obama. This interview is from 5 years ago and they are talking about baseball. Former President Barack Obama explains why he’s rooting for the Cubs to win it all even though he’s a White Sox fan. Are you ready? Let’s get started!

2. The best thing since sliced bread

直訳で「スライスした食パン以来のベストなもの」となるこの表現は、物や人が非常に素晴らしいことを意味する口語表現です。特に新しい商品や発明品、画期的だと思われる物に対してよく使われます。例えば、iPodが初めて発売された時に“The iPod was the best thing since sinced bread.（iPodは最高だった）”と言ったり、すごく便利なアプリを見つけた時に“This app is the best thing since sliced bread.（このアプリは画期的だ）”と言ったりするような状況で使います。

ちなみに、アメリカではパンをスライスする機械が発明されるまで、手作業でスライスしていました。1928年にパンをスライスする機械が発明され、当時は画期的な発明だと注目を浴びました。それ以来、何かを称賛する口語的な言い回しとして “~ is the best thing since sliced bread”が使われるようになりました。状況によっては皮肉を込めて褒める意味合いで使うこともありますが、基本的に何か素晴らしいことを表すポジティブな意味として使われます。

In the U.S., it’s common for cities to have two professional sports teams for the same sport, especially in big cities like LA, New York and Chicago. Chicago has two MLB teams, the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs. Former President Barack Obama is a big White Sox fan and when this interview took place, the Cubs, not the White Sox were going to the World Series. So Jimmy Kimmel poked fun at him by asking him how he felt about the other Chicago team going to the World Series. You can see from former President Barack Obama’s reaction that it was a tough question for him to answer. He had to pause for a second before responding, which just goes to show that he is a true White Sox fan.

That’s why former President Barack Obama joked about Thomas Edison still being alive and sliced bread not being invented yet, both which are true statements. Sliced bread was invented on July 7th 1928, and that’s why former President Barack Obama said it was literally the best thing since sliced bread. When he said this, he meant it both literally and figuratively, and it was his way of showing his humor. The Chicago Cubs ended up winning the World Series the year this interview took place and ended the 108-year championship drought.
